How did you choose profession?
When you started to GvG,or when you come in new GvG guild, how you choosed what profession you will run for GvG?
Let's say you know play with ranger and monk really good, you played them longest. You even like to play Ele snarer and Mesmer snarer or using illusion magic.
You don't have any problem playing warriors, but you dislike playing assassin, paragon and dervish.
Did you choose warrior because you are skilled with that profession?
Did you choose mesmer because they had warriors but missed mesmer? (that means you played what they needed at that time, even if you weren't so skilled with it)
Did you later asked them for you to be monk (and not warrior) because you think you are much better at heal/prot then that person who played it?
(if so,how did they react?)
so,that is my problem. I don't know what profession to play in GvG.
I am searching for a new GvG guild at this time, now I want it to be serious.
I am very good at monk, ranger and snarer. And I would like play warrior also.
But the thing is,let's say they search for any of this 4 (or 5) professions,(example, they miss WoH and Ranger), how you would choose what to play?
I wouldn't say for myself I found myself the best in any of this professions.

I started out playing ranger in PvE and found I was quick at interupting, when playing with a friend, he suggested I ranger in TA/RA...which lead me to mesmer. I played my mesmer constantly and in everything until I knew the profession inside and out. My hubby's guild recrutied me, and put me in the GvG mesmer spot and I just went from there--playing all the time, then getting guest invites to play with others, which gave me a chance to soak up knowledge. I listened to other players I got to know and learned tips and strats.
Being a mesmer also gives you insight into how other professions work, as you need to know what everyone and everything does so your shutdown is effective. That lead me into monking and ele support.
The only position I have little experience on is frontline warrior.
You said you like monk...well those are ALWAYS needed and in demand. I'd hone your monking skills and start from there.

Played pretty much everything while bouncing around various bad guilds. Settled on flag runner/warrior as my favourite roles, and play depending on which is needed.

I chose monk because that was my main PvE profession and I can make red bars not go down.
Then I played sin so I can have my own personal monk that follows me around while I kill shit.
Then I played runner because most other runners either
a) can't heal (50% of runners),
b) can't think for themselves (90% of runners), or
c) tries to cap the flagstand without a flag (Hates).
Though the flagging thing doesn't work out because half the time I'm split in their base and blowing stuff up, and the few times I actually ran a flag I would get soloed by noodle, candygirl, kittenstomper, and just about every other warrior out there from r1 to r5000 (but never lemming lol).
Then I played ranger because apparently there are no rangers left in the game but every other guild needs one.

Played warrior and couldn't play anything else at the time.
Then they needed an ele runner and i was the last one in so that was me, found out it wasn't hard and now i could play that too.
Since I've played everything and now it doesn't really matter.

I played warrior because that's what my first 'real' guild thought I was ok at.

Out of all of us, I was the least terrible at ranger, so I became a ranger.
It's not always about what you are best at, its about what everyone else sucks at. And everyone sucks at ranger.

i know this is for gvg and i will get to that part, i started pve as ranger, ended up making a monk cuz i was tired of bad monks, ended up going from r4-r10 in ha specifically as monk. got into a top 50 guild and played mesmer (i used to haunt ra back in the day with distortion+spirit of failure spam) never liked ele that much so i respectfully decline when im asked to, then came cripshot flag runners GG rangers are back. then comes the stupidly ridiculous 3 derv 2 smite mes and here i am back at monk since people dont seem to think to call when they are being linebacked by multiple effing dervz.....
needless to say, follow the diagram, play what you are best at FROM what is needed.
ALSO: tell your warrior to switch targets and that maybe just maybe when their front lines converge on 1 person that one of the monks should have his monk fingers already hitting PS or SB when the warrior gets there NOT EFFING BEFORE THEY DO BECAUSE THEN THEY SWITCH AND STILL SPIKE YEW!

Started as a flagger because my first PvE character meant I only had ranger & ele skills unlocked, plus flagger dueling was awesome in 2005. Moved to playing eles & warriors because of air spiking in tombs and running dual/triple smite ether renewal builds in gvg.
Ended up as primarily a warrior when I came to understand that they're the most necessary for and most cabable of blowing stuff up, and I have an offensive mindset in general. Plus they're nearly exempt to being made obsolete by meta-shift.
My recommendation is play anything you enjoy as long as you can get good experience with it, by keeping keen on the current trends & guild necessities.

I've played just about everything a decent amount except flagger and bitchroles.
Once you develop a decent understanding of the game and don't suck you should really be able to play most things (of course for rangers and mesmers a decent connection/pc/reflexes are 'required')

Forge Runner

I began by playing Elementalist in PvE, and that was my first class as well in PvP (RA - I played RA / TA only for a very long time). My brother, who also played Guild Wars, had a PvE Necro that he used in RA as well. That Necro did some seemingly fantastic feats, such as winning 1v3s without a build aimed specifically at doing that. I emulated him and ended up playing Blood Necro, like him, keeping multiple Life Siphons up and using Life Transfer for 'spikes'. As you might imagine, I didn't know PvP very well back then.
One of the things about RA is that Monks are very important, both if they're on your side and on the other. I built up a list of good Monks whenever I saw them. While talking to one of them he suggested I play Monk. You probably noticed the Necro build I used isn't very good at killing Monks (actually, it's not much good for anything other than winning wars of attrition). So I followed up on his advice. While I practiced in RA he would tell me what I did wrong, and I quite often asked him detailed questions like: if an Assassin Shadow Prisons to you and you have pre-veiled yourself, do you a) cast Spiit Bond, b) cast Guardian, c) hit Dark Escape, d) drop Veil or e) look for someone to Return to?
He taught me a lot about Monking, and I subsequently took up playing Monk in RA. Every now and then when I couldn't stand playing Monk I'd switch back to Necro. Whenever the regen-based defense of the Necro couldn't hold up to burst damage, or whenever there are too many physical damagers around, I'd play Elementalist and spam Blinding Flash.
These skills obviously fit into the broad class of defensive midline / backline in a GvG, and when I first began GvG that's what I would play. With little or no experience playing interrupt I can't play Ranger / Dom Mes; without experience quarterknocking and quarterstepping either I can't play frontline. I am relatively more confident of my ability at Monk since my experience at Elementalist is built on Dual Attunements and nonstop spammage (very fragile in GvG), so that's what I play most of the time. But whenever there's a need to I can slip into defensive midline quite easily. Based on the general style of play (semi-defensive, semi-offensive, like the defensive midline I play) I'm also interested in the runner position, but a severe lack of experience with it means I'm not a good choice there.
All this history is obviously of little help for you to choose a profession.
I'd suggest you tell the guild in question that you can play all those roles. If they're reasonable they'll usually allow you to try out ... but also try to play your strongest roles first, because some people think they can flag and actually cannot - these players risk getting kicked out of the guild before they can demonstrate how good they are at Dom Mes, for example. After you get accepted into a core team there'll usually be chances for you to switch: your guild might be short a player and a guest can't play frontline but can play whatever role you normally play, that's a chance to try out something new.

As basically everyone did, I started out PvE as a warrior. When I moved to GvG I was lucky enough to start off playing with people who were a lot more experienced than I was at the time (r500 - lol). They basically filled out what they deemed the "important" roles - warriors, monks, ranger, mesmer and then they needed somebody to play bsurge ele (lol bitchrole) because they believed it required the least skill to play. So I've been playing various bitchroles, was primarily bsurge now water ele, for a year and a half to two years now, and I've learned to get a strange pleasure from knowing that people like feanor (^^) there shit their pants when they see my name pop up on the screen.

I started off playing an LoD monk, but it wasn't fun, so I played mesmer. That was the most fun. So I played mesmer now.
It's also mostly because I played every single profession a lot, and being a mesmer, you need to know how every profession thinks. I'm seen playing every single profession alot of the time (including monk, flagger, warrior, ranger, fc water; being good at it is another story).
